Here's the original context so that you can increase the clarity without shortening it. I need it to fill a 25-minute interview: To start, could you share a brief overview of your background and what led you to explore GenAI? With over two decades of experience at the forefront of leveraging technology for social impact, I was driven to explore generative AI (GenAI) by its immense potential to amplify global change efforts. My passion lies in equipping leaders and organizations with cutting-edge tools to craft compelling narratives, enhance stakeholder engagement, and drive meaningful progress. I have a BS in Information Systems from Syracuse University iShool and a MMH from Cornell University with a focus on Services Marketing. I began my career in Marketing, B2B Sales and Management Consulting with Digital Equipment Corporation and MICROS Systems, inc. respectively, helping businesses to integrate tech to improve decision making, increase controls, and enhance revenue and profitability. After that I started my own firms doing the same in the social impact space, helping organizations like Susan G. Komen for the Cure North Jersey, Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, and National Eating Disorders Association integrate tech into their event-based fundraising efforts, at a time when event platforms like CVENT had just gone live, online auctions were just beginning and organizations were still relying heavily on paper-based invitations for galas. At that point I was already teaching courses related to event and conference management. When the 2009 economic downturn occurred, I lost 60% of my business overnight and had to pivot. It made me hunker down and recognize that while the large gala budgets might a thing of the past, what really would be important was the increasing availability of vehicles to increase organizational visibility and raise awareness / funds online. So I pitched such a course of NYU’s Heyman Center for Fundraising and Philanthropy in spring 2009 and have been there since, developing various courses related to fundraising and marketing online. Last year I introduced two hands-on courses to enable professionals across industries to leverage GenAI to enhance digital storytelling and stakeholder engagement. I founded The International Social Impact Institute in 2020, a pioneering social enterprise dedicated to providing transformative training and consulting on digital storytelling, personal branding, and stakeholder engagement strategies for social impact leaders and organizations across the globe that struggled to differentiate themselves and activate their stakeholders despite creating great impact. Last January when I first tried ChatGPT, I recognized its potential not only in my firm, but also in how we could enhance the content we created for clients, and then eventually saw the importance of integrating genAI into our courses, training, consulting and coaching. Through The ISII, we've had the privilege of collaborating with renowned partners across sectors, such as CIVICUS, Cornell University, ENGIE North America, GivingTuesday, the JCC Association of North America, Nelson Mandela University, NY NOW, the Obama Foundation, The Resource Alliance UK, USAID/Power Africa, and many others. We have conducted over 110 events that have reached more than 34,000 participants worldwide, facilitated over 100 strategic partnerships and since June of last year, provided nearly 2,000 people with GenAI knowledge.
With your expertise in strategic planning, what key considerations should leaders keep in mind when integrating GenAI into their strategies? As a strategic planning expert, I cannot overstate the importance of recognizing GenAI's ability to revolutionize how we communicate impact, drive fundraising / sales, and elevate personal and organizational brands. I also believe it can help with organizational differentiation through innovation. Leaders must approach GenAI integration with a future-focused mindset, developing robust ethical AI governance frameworks to ensure responsible and inclusive adoption. Crucially, GenAI strategies should be centered around comprehensive workforce upskilling initiatives. Empowering teams with AI literacy and hands-on training is vital for seamless integration and maximizing GenAI's potential across operations. This could include leveraging GenAI for dynamic marketing content tailored to diverse audience segments or generating in-depth analytics for optimized decision-making. With respect to innovation, I’ve had the privilege of coaching the CEO of an innovative organization in Uganda named BarefootLaw. It’s a legal aid organization that the founder began as a Facebook page to provide free legal services to those typically lacking access to legal services and knowledge in Uganda, and has since evolved into a 3-country organization on its way to scale throughout the commonwealth because it made a very important decision to augment its lawyers with genAI, which provides them with 10X efficiency in delivering services, and also enabled him to become one of the social entrepreneurs recognized at Davos this past January.
How can leaders leverage GenAI to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing? GenAI presents a powerful opportunity for leaders to revolutionize collaboration and knowledge sharing within their organizations. By harnessing AI-driven storytelling capabilities, leaders can craft compelling narratives that resonate deeply with stakeholders, driving engagement and facilitating open dialogue. For instance, I've utilized GenAI to analyze post-event survey data and extract valuable insights into attendee preferences and areas for improvement. This data-driven approach fosters transparency, enables agile iteration, and encourages cross-team ideation for elevated experiences. Moreover, GenAI can streamline reporting processes, automating the generation of comprehensive analytics that uncover trends and inform strategic decision-making collaboratively. Another way that I have used Gen AI is for an organization for which I volunteer which was interested in providing its live education and testing to audiences in Japan to increase accessibility of its credential without having to penalize those who are not native English speakers. That led us to do a pilot with Wordly AI, which resulted in the organization delivering its first course in Japan with live translation facilitated by AI, and opens up opportunities for it to serve other non-English-speaking markets across the globe.
What strategies have you found effective for integrating GenAI into decision-making? An effective strategy I've implemented is blending GenAI techniques with tailored learning experiences that cater to diverse styles. This personalized approach ensures GenAI integration is not only impactful but also deeply contextualized for each team's unique growth journey.
For example, in my work training aspiring hospitality leaders at Cornell University, I've leveraged GenAI to craft dynamic event marketing materials and curate immersive themed experiences. By involving students in the AI-powered creative process, from concept to execution, they gain hands-on experience with GenAI's decision-support capabilities while developing tangible portfolio pieces. For my students in my Digital Storytelling course at New York University, who are professionals and leaders in nonprofit organizations, last semester, I had them each develop a digital strategy for their respective organizations using ChatGPT, at the end of which they presented a five-minute presentation in which they had to generate incorporating various genAI tools I taught them, such as Canva Magic Design, Midjourney, etc. This learn-by-doing methodology empowers professionals to understand GenAI's potential applications intimately, making informed decisions on how to ethically and strategically integrate it across their operations.
In your experience, what are the key challenges leaders face when adopting GenAI, and how can they be overcome? The first challenge is for leaders to overcome the prevalent fear they have developed based on how AI is covered by the media and recognize that we’ve already been using AI for a while as consumers and now we have an opportunity to do so as producers and even innovators. A significant challenge leaders face is understanding GenAI's full scope and developing a clear roadmap for ethical, strategic integration that aligns with their core values and objectives. This can be addressed through partnerships with AI experts, continuous learning opportunities, and open dialogue to navigate the complexities of responsible AI adoption. Additionally, data readiness is crucial. Organizations must assess their existing data assets, identify gaps, and implement measures to ensure their datasets are diverse, inclusive, and contextually relevant. This data-centric approach mitigates bias and enables GenAI systems to deliver accurate, actionable insights. Finally, I spoke at an AI conference last week in Vegas, where Boodle was also present, and was approached by a CEO who asked me how he should go about introducing AI into his company. He felt the need to do so, but didn’t know how to. My advice to him was that he and his team should identify their pain points and then look for the solutions he was exposed to during the conference to address them, rather than just implementing it for the sake of doing so. Overcoming these hurdles requires a steadfast commitment to upskilling workforces, fostering AI literacy at all levels, and cultivating a culture of curiosity and experimentation within an ethical framework.
What is your favorite Collaborative GenAI use case? One of my favorite collaborative use cases is leveraging GenAI for co-creating compelling personal brand narratives and thought leadership content. By providing the AI with a structured prompt, such as the SHIFT framework I often use, it can synthesize our unique experiences and perspectives into a cohesive, audience-tailored narrative. This collaborative approach blends human ingenuity with AI's analytical capabilities, resulting in personal brand assets that genuinely resonate and establish credibility. I've witnessed firsthand how AI-powered storytelling can elevate professionals' online presence, drive impactful networking, and unlock new career opportunities. In a live demo, I love showing people how they can enhance an otherwise ordinary resume or LinkedIn using genAI, due to the unique way that it pattern matches, and how that can then be replicated across one’s profiles and then used to determine the type of content one wants to share to reinforce their brand story. I find that by introducing people to genAI to first help their own personal brand (because we all think about “what’s in it for me”) it opens the door up for them to consider applying it to their company / organization, and begin to realize the full value of these tools.
What are some of your favorite GenAI models or bots and why? Among my favorite GenAI models are ChatGPT for its versatility across tasks like content creation, analysis, and even coding assistance, and Canva's Magic Design for its intuitive AI-powered design capabilities. I love Claude because I see it as ChatGPT’s smart cousin who can really enhance my writing. I'm also excited about the potential of multimodal models like Claude, which can understand and generate content across different formats, from text to images and audio. This cross-platform integration opens up new avenues for immersive, multi-sensory storytelling experiences. I find DALL*E very easy to use when generating images. These tools have proven invaluable in streamlining creative processes while amplifying engagement and visual storytelling impact. However, my very favorite is Boodle because as a platform, it serves as my “Swiss Army Knife” of bots that I can collaborate with, along with my team and students to really amplify our collective impact.
Any tips or tricks you want to share with other GenAI users? My advice is to approach GenAI with a mindset of curiosity, experimentation, and ethical accountability. Continuously upskill to stay ahead of the curve, but use GenAI as an aid that complements human ingenuity, not as a wholesale replacement. It's also crucial to be intentional about prompting. Provide clear, structured prompts that guide the AI towards your desired outcomes. Additionally, embrace an iterative process. Don't settle for the initial output; refine and fine-tune the results through multiple iterations until you achieve the desired level of quality and resonance. Finally, what I like to do is see these tools as digital assistants, asking them to help me with tasks in the same way I do with human ones.
Looking ahead, what excites you most about the future of human-AI collaboration? What excites me most is the boundless potential for human-AI collaboration to catalyze progress across sectors and geographies, driving social equity, environmental sustainability, and economic empowerment on a global scale. I envision synergies between human creativity and AI capabilities unlocking innovative solutions to humanity's greatest challenges. From developing targeted interventions for underserved communities to accelerating scientific breakthroughs and pioneering sustainable practices, the future of human-AI collaboration holds the key to a more just, prosperous, and resilient world. Ialso believe that it opens up new avenues for innovation in ways and from those who we ordinarily wouldn’t hear from.
Before we wrap up, do you have any final advice for leaders looking to harness GenAI's power? My final advice is to embrace GenAI as a transformative force, but do so responsibly and strategically. Invest in continuous learning, upskilling initiatives, and forge collaborative partnerships with AI experts and ethicists. Develop a robust AI governance framework that prioritizes accountability, inclusivity, and alignment with your organization's core values. Ultimately, GenAI is a powerful tool, but it's our human ingenuity, vision, and ethical compass that will shape its impact. Harness its potential wisely to amplify your organization's mission, drive meaningful change, and create a better future for all. Finally, have fun with it. It’s not going anywhere, so just go ahead and try it!
